“The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display His craftsmanship.” Psalms 19:1 NLT
Our God is so creative! His craftsmanship consists of thousands upon thousands of different shapes and sizes of every living creature (which includes you and me). I stand in awe of His greatness, imagination, and humor. We must all admit, God has a sense of humor having created such a variety.
Amongst His craftsmanship, He made us to display His creativity through our worship.
John Piper stated…. “Worship is what we were created for. God created the universe so that it would display the worth of His glory. And He created us so that we would see this glory and reflect it by knowing and loving it — with all our heart and soul and mind and strength.”
I believe that our God loves the process of creating so much that He even made our worship to have the capability of remaining fresh and active, not growing stale or being continuously the same. That’s why throughout His Word we come across passages that tell us to sing a new song.
“Go ahead—sing your new song to the Lord! Let everyone in every language sing him a new song.”
Psalm 96:1. TPT
“My God, I will sing you a brand-new song! The harp inside my heart will make music to you!”
Psalms 144:9 TPT
“Sing a new song to the Lord! Sing his praises from the ends of the earth! Sing, all you who sail the seas, all you who live in distant coastlands.”
Isaiah 42:10 NLT
These are just a few of the many passages that instruct us to sing a new song.
God not only desires artists, dancers, songwriters, and musicians to express themselves continually throughout each generation, but for every single individual to be able to sing a new song to the Lord.
A new song is also referred to as a “spontaneous song”. This reference is often a melody that has not been written or perhaps never been sung. Another interpretation of a new song is “singing in the Spirit”. This phrase refers to the act of God giving you the words or utterances to sing as you seek Him in the process of worshiping.
“And your hearts will overflow with a joyful song to the Lord Jehovah. Keep speaking to each other with words of Scripture, singing the Psalms with praises and spontaneous songs given by the Spirit!”
Ephesians 5:19 TPT
“Let the word of Christ live in you richly, flooding you with all wisdom. Apply the Scriptures as you teach and instruct one another with the Psalms, and with festive praises, and with prophetic songs given to you spontaneously by the Spirit, so sing to God with all your hearts!”
Colossians 3:16 TPT
Perhaps you have never experienced singing your own new song and would like to know how to get started. If so, then I have a simple 5 step worship exercise prepared for you.
Creative Worship Exercise
Items you will need:
A) Praise & Worship music B) A pen & pad
C) A quiet place to be with God.
1) Begin listening to your worship music. Write down all the words and phrases that come to mind in describing who God is to you. Example: You are my King, Emmanuel, You are magnificent etc. Expand your vocabulary.
2) Speak your words and phrases out loud. For an up-tempo praise song, your words might sound more like a declaration or victory shout! If your song has a slower tempo and more worshipful, then your words might sound more soothing and reverent.
3) Close your eyes and picture a blank canvas. As you listen to your music and speak your words and phrases out loud, envision your words painting the canvas in your mind.
4) You are now creating your own new song upon a canvas and presenting it to God as a masterpiece from your heart to Him.
5) Don’t become analytical or fearful of what your new song sounds like or the lack of words you might have chosen. Your focus is being original. Even if you continue to repeat only one word, God will honor it and bless you!
If our experience of Him is to go from glory to glory, then I believe that means we are not limited in how He has designed us to express our worship to Him. Be open to worship in new ways which helps you experience His glory at another level. We need to learn to take ourselves out of our “only tradition mind frame” (that we often are unaware of) in order to worship Him in spirit and in truth.
“But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23-24 NLT
