”Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Do not be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” Matthew 14:24-28
For most of us, it takes a lot of courage to not be afraid. Perhaps some levels of fear are easier to overcome with a conquering courage than others. I know I can think of areas in my own life that this is true. But then again, it’s harder to apply that courage the more intense the fear issue becomes.
The disciples were in a predicament I would classify as a high level, very intense, life threatening situation. These guys were frightened in the worst way. Yet Jesus, knowing all of their concerns, came to them and said these words…..”Do not be afraid. Take courage. I am here.”
Many forms of evil spread throughout our country everyday. The word poverty used to be more commonly referred to in third world countries but not any more, as the numbers continue to rise even in our communities and areas close to us.
I had an opportunity to recently pray with two separate individuals on the same day who are from two different areas of our country. Both are experiencing extreme hardships along with sharing horrific human trafficking scenarios that involve one of their children.
Wrapping our minds around the fact that these situations exist and much more that they are close by, is becoming a sad and unfortunate reality.
Many choose to not think about it because it’s simply too hard and depressing. Some choose to overlook the problems because the issues do not involve them. While for others, it has created such a fear for themselves and their families that they worry for their safety and financial status constantly.
As big of a problem this has become, our Jesus remains steadfast to assist us through the difficulties.
Some might say the disciples had a physical and visible Jesus that made all the difference because He came directly to them in a miraculous way by walking on the water. I would love to see that, wouldn’t you? To be able to see Jesus walking across a stormy sea coming to my rescue would have me speechless.
No, we do not live in a time where we see that taking place. But, He still comes in another way, providing the same amazing results. His word says….
But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I am going away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate (Holy Spirit) will not come to you, but if I go, I will send Him to you. John 16:7
Anyone who believes in Me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. John 14:12
Often times we do not recognize Jesus when He is coming to help us because He’s not coming in the fashion we expect. We become just like the disciples not realizing who actually is coming to our aid. We might even reject His help because He is providing it in a way that is uncommon to us or makes us uncomfortable.
Yet, Jesus wants us all to know and understand that the words He spoke to the disciples on the day He walked on the water have traveled thousands of years, through multiple decades, and ever changing generations to find us… to find you and me. His voice is as clear as it was that day, heard high above the wind and the waves….
Do not be afraid. Take courage. I am here.
His presence is with us, as prayers begin to open the doors to assist the multitudes with care. Something good begins to happen when the hurting vocalize their needs and then another comes along side and they start to pray together for a change to take place. This is a positive step forward that includes demonstrating someone cares, sharing God’s word, forming communication, building trust, supplying specific resources, and so much more.
God’s word is a vital part that needs to be administered.
His promises keep penetrating through the vast amounts of heartache, hunger, and torment. They are not provided to use as a last resort. We are not to declare His promises only when nothing else works. They are meant to be utilized on-going, as these powerful words of honor supply the most effective results across the entire planet. Here’s just a few reminders….
Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13
Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world. 1 John 4:4
My enemies will retreat when I call to you for help. This I know; God is on my side. Psalm 56:9
I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise and watch over you. Psalm 32:8
Jesus is walking on the water for you right now. Do you recognize Him? No obstacle will stand in His way nor pull Him under from reaching you.
With a calm, reassuring, and confident voice He is speaking directly to you……
I am here.
